5 Life Changing Countries

This is an exciting post to share because these five countries have played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today. I’m passionate about sharing these stories to show how seemingly small moments can drastically change the course of your life.

There’s no particular order, but I’ll start with Sri Lanka since it holds a special place in my heart.

When I booked my trip to Sri Lanka, I hadn’t heard much about the country, and its mystery intrigued me. I didn’t know anyone who had traveled there before, so I felt compelled to explore this unknown territory. I’ve visited twice now and can’t wait to go back.

The first trip was for a 10-day Ayurvedic health retreat, which was a 10/10 experience! I solo traveled for the first half, then convinced a friend to join me for the second half, where we cared for an elephant named Kumari, watch our YouTube video. <click here> My second visit was more of a stopover before heading to the Maldives, which is just an hour away by flight.

What stood out most?

The blend of nature and people made the biggest impact on me. In some areas, wild elephants and monkeys roam freely, and the southern beaches are filled with turtles. The proximity of jungles, hills, and beaches makes it feel like a condensed version of paradise.

The hospitality was unforgettable. Locals went out of their way to make me feel welcome. Lakmali, who owned the retreat I stayed at, was one of the kindest people I’ve met in my travels. I also met Banti, owner of Dream Cabana, who took me out surfing and shared local tips.

How it changed my life?

Sri Lanka renewed my belief in the generosity of strangers. The calm, unhurried pace of life left a lasting impression on me, reminding me to embrace simplicity and live more mindfully.

Honduras brought one of the biggest pivotal moments in my life, and it was completely unexpected. I originally traveled there to gain my open water diving qualification, with a loose plan to explore Central America.

I visited Utila, a small island where I completed my open water certification, which turned out to be one of the most magical experiences to date. What was supposed to be a one week scuba diving course turned into three months of living on the island and completing my Dive Master qualification.

What stood out the most?

Utila is tiny but full of heart. It felt like a hub for like-minded people who love the ocean, nature, and adventure. Every day, I woke up excited about which sea creatures we might encounter. During my three months there, I swam with sperm whales, whale sharks and dolphins. I’ve never felt more alive.

How it changed my life?

Staying in Utila for the Dive Master course was life-changing. It gave me the rare opportunity to live on the other side of the world, pursue a new passion, and be surrounded by amazing people. Utila also led me to Fort Lauderdale, where I completed a super yacht qualification—another story for another time.

United Kingdom

England, in particular, sparked my courage to embark on solo adventures and embrace unconventional choices. While it’s not my usual ocean-centered destination, it brought opportunities I never imagined.

What stood out the most?

Living in the UK was liberating because of how well-connected it is to the rest of the world. Knowing I could hop on a flight to Europe in under an hour was mind blowing!

How it changed my life?

London turned me into a "serial traveler." I stored my belongings in a storage shed and gave up my permanent residence to travel full-time, using money I’d otherwise spend on rent for Airbnbs i’d choose on the world map by simply saying “eenie, meenie, miny, mo”. That choice allowed me to live the life I had always dreamed of.

United Arab Emirates

As I mentioned in my first blog post, Dubai was the first country I moved to alone at age 23. It answered the question, “How can I be paid to travel the world?” Emirates Airlines provided that dream opportunity, and I highly recommend becoming a flight attendant to anyone asking the same question.

What stood out the most?

Dubai is like a SimCity—full of incredible man-made structures and fascinating architecture, but lacking much natural scenery.

How it changed my life?

Dubai allowed me to fulfill my dream of traveling the world, but it didn’t fulfill my soul. I learned that I thrive in places with nature and adventure, and Dubai’s luxury didn’t bring me happiness. Eventually, I applied for a job with Qantas and returned to Australia.

Egypt

Egypt is a hidden gem, and to get the most out of your visit, I recommend going with a tour company. The country can feel overwhelming, but the experiences are worth it.

What stood out the most?

The blend of ancient history with modern life. Seeing the Great Pyramids situated so close to the dense city blew my mind. Cairo was chaotic, but other areas were more peaceful. Sailing down the Nile on a felucca was a magical experience I’ll never forget.

How it changed my life?

Dahab, a small town well-known for diving, is where I discovered my passion for scuba diving. After one unforgettable dive in the Red Sea, I knew scuba diving was something I wanted to pursue more seriously, which eventually led me to Utila.

Final Reflection

Reflecting on these countries brings me immense gratitude for living in the moment. I encourage you to reflect on your own life and the experiences that have shaped who you are today.

Have you had a life-altering travel experience? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below! Otherwise, I can’t wait to see how this post inspires your next adventure.

Sending positive, adventurous vibes your way!
